The Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding

Given the importance of breastfeeding for the health and well-being of mothers and children, in 2011 the U.S. Surgeon General put forth a call to action urging health care providers, employers, communities, researchers, and government leaders to better support mothers to meet their personal goals for breastfeeding. Most mothers in the United States want to breastfeed, and start our doing so. Yet within just three months after giving birth, more than two-thirds of breastfeeding mothers have already given up on breastfeeding exclusively as recommended by WHO and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
